Quarantine Retreat: Writing in the Time of Covid-19

E-mail me at cherylbk@gmail.com for a copy of the Quarantine Retreat. (I'll also send you fun, little freebie "prizes" you can print each week to help keep you and your critique group inspired.) Keep writing my friends. The world needs your stories now, more then ever!

It's taken some time to adjust to the new normal of quarantine. My Twitter and FB feeds are full of authors posting about the incredible works of art created by people like Shakespeare when they were quarantined. The other half of my feed is full of friends congratulating themselves for putting on pants. I heartily applaud both of these accomplishments!

I gave myself some time to offer support to my family, friends and fellow writers, and to grieve over the devastating loss of life and the fear that is insinuating itself around the world. Yesterday I decided to pick myself up off the couch, put on pants, and do something positive. I needed a way to get myself excited about being creative.  And so, with the fervor of the type A personality that I am, I created The Quarantine Retreat for myself and my PenUltimates! (The PenUltimates are my incredibly amazing critique partners, two of whose books you'e probably read, and another 5 of us whose books you will read one day.) After I sent it to them, I realized that other writers might also find it useful!

The Quarantine Retreat starts on Monday, March 31 and runs through the month of April. It's a simple structure that asks you to find 1hr and 15 minutes a day, broken into 3 smaller chunks of 15, 30 and 30. (Of course that's the goal, but you can do as much or as little as you want! Tailor it to what works for you.) The first for an Inspiration Exercise, the second for Writing/Editing/Revising, and the third to deepen the Craft of Writing.

I set up a Google Sheet for my PenUltimates to track everyone's progress (there are only winners no matter what everyone accomplishes), and I've promised encouragement PRIZES for those joining me to make it more fun. I'm going to send out little prizes to my critique partners each week, and something special for all of us at the end of April. What can you add to this to make it fun, meaningful and encouraging for your group of writers?
